Indian Railways has canceled all passenger trains till March 31 in the wake of the coronavirus epidemic. The Railway Ministry said in a notification issued on Sunday that the goods trains and minimum trains would run only from midnight of March 22 till midnight of March 31.
Railways Minister Piyush Goyal on Sunday announced that all trains of Indian Railways, including premium trains, mail or express trains, passenger trains, suburban trains, Kolkata Metro Rail, Konkan Railway and other trains, will be canceled till the end of March 31. The level of suburban trains and Kolkata Metro services will continue till 24:00 hours on 22.03.2020, ”the ministry said in a statement.
The trains will arrive at their destinations starting at 4 am on Sunday morning.
“The movement of Goods trains of Indian Railways will continue to ensure the necessary supplies in different parts of the country,” the ministry said.
People who book tickets on these trains get a full refund, which they can charge up to June 21st. Arrangements will be made for this purpose, the ministry said.
The Railways has already reduced its services by canceling the majority of trains.
Prior to Sunday’s announcement, the railway warned people not to travel on Saturday, canceled more than 3000 trains, eased refund terms, and closed its museums and parks due to coronavirus cases. The National Transporter alerted passengers while traveling on trains, finding that there were some cases of coronavirus infected passengers on trains.
There were very few instances of people being asked to be detained for traveling on trains.
Railway people are urged to avoid or postpone all unnecessary travel to prevent congestion on trains and promote social distance.
As a preventive measure to control the spread of the novel coronavirus, the railway has ordered the closure of its rail museums, heritage galleries, and heritage parks.
