Indian-origin Cardiac surgeon dies of COVID-19 in the UK

London, April 7: An “incredibly devoted” Indian-born surgeon Mr. Jitendra Rathod has died in the UK after testing positive for COVID-19, a media report said on Tuesday.

Jitendra Rathod, Associate Specialist in Cardio-Thoracic Surgery at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, the Metro newspaper reported.

He died in the hospital’s general intensive care unit early Monday morning, health officials confirmed.

Rathore paid tribute to a statement posted on the Cardiff and Whale University Health Board website.

“He was a very dedicated surgeon. He took good care of his patients,” he said, adding that he was well-liked and respected by everyone.

“He is a very kind and wonderful human being. His commitment to uniqueness is ideal.”

The father-of-two has worked in the Department of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery since the mid-1990s.

After a brief stint abroad, Rathod, known to colleagues and friends as ” Jithu ”, returned to the University of Hospital of Wales.

The UK reported 52,279 coronavirus cases with 5,385 deaths.
