BJP President Amit Shah is expected to take an active membership from Telangana as the party focuses on gaining power in the 2023 Assembly elections.
“He (Shah) promised to take active membership from Telangana and Hyderabad and that too from my residential address,” BJP Telangana unit president K Laxman told PTI here.
Active membership is symbolism and Shah is showing Telangana as a priority state to come to power in the next election, BJP spokesperson Krishna Sagar Rao said. Laxman said Shah would take an active membership on September 17 when he proposed to visit the city to attend the celebration of ‘Telangana Liberation Day’ (which marks the merger of the Hyderabad state with the Indian Union in 1948).
He said the party’s state unit had asked Union Home Minister Amit Shah to attend the ‘Telangana Liberation Day’ on September 17. However, Laxman alleged that the TRS government had betrayed the Telangana people by not holding state ceremonies. Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao questioned the Chief Minister of Undivided Andhra Pradesh K Rosaiah that day.
Not only the TRS but also the former governments of undivided Andhra Pradesh have not celebrated that day, he said. The BJP president would address the party’s open house on September 17.
With active membership from the Amit Shah, in Telangana, it would be more enthusiastic for the people who work for BJP in the state. Amit Shah, who launched the party’s membership drive in Hyderabad in July, is aiming to recruit 18 lakh new members in Telangana, instead of the current 18 lakhs as per the state unit plan.
With tremendous gains in the Lok Sabha elections (winning four out of 17 seats), the BJP is making a concerted effort to rise to power as an alternative to the TRS.
