Is Cloud Bursting Right for Your Organization?

The biggest achievement of the hybrid cloud which can be given to the data center is the “efficiency”.

Data centers were earlier created for any particular special purpose but now these data centers are serving the special purposes and involving in multiple heavy duty analytics and performing business-critical actions which include storage provisioning, safeguarding sensitive data and so on.

Data centers can be freed as there is lot of migration of storage and compute resources to public cloud as there can be lot of free space that will be available in data centers which can be used for other important business specific needs. This actually helps data centers in cost cutting like purchasing multiple storage systems and multiple servers and meanwhile it solely dosent solve the entire computing challenge.

One of the most vital thing we hear about hybrid cloud was “ cloud bursting”, let me explore what exactly is this cloud bursting is and what are the challenges in it while implementing it.

Problem with Storage

Assume that you got an application which runs in a Private cloud, say for example it is an ecommerce website. Consider a particular month of the year which has got high sales and very huge traffic to your website like a shopping season, on that particular month there could be heavy traffic to you website and so your existing storage could be sufficient but when it comes to that season your storage is no longer sufficient.

So the ultimate thing most companies do is going for investment for additional storage but end of the day the additional storage which the companies purchases goes waste for the rest of the year which results in inefficient use of resources.

Hybrid Cloud Solution

Cloud bursting is something which offers an ultimate solution for the same problem. So the cloud busting offers an additional storage on rental purpose for the organizations so as to meet the additional storage need for a short time. This is a win-win arrangement made by the data center so as to save the organization from investing huge on additional storage for short time.

Technically, this could be accomplished one or two of various ways that. a company would possibly run an application locally then “burst” another instance onto the public cloud throughout peak demand. or else, the complete application can be migrated to the public cloud to unlock local resources for different applications. that approach is best depending on many considerations: is that the application organized to support multiple instances running at a similar time? can the appliance handle the enhanced latency that’s seemingly to occur when running entirely from the public cloud?

To go ahead with Burst or Not to Burst?

The idea of cloud bursting (also known as workload overflow processing) has been around for several years, however has yet to genuinely seize on, in particular on the enterprise level. Why is that?

The primary reason is that the cloud bursting is a simple concept when it comes to general perspective but when it comes to technical perspective it is difficult in terms in both infrastructure and application level. First and foremost, it is difficult to often migrate to and from the cloud storage. Bandwidth will be that major constraint while moving from one cloud to another.

Secondly, software must be configured to run multiple instances simultaneously. If you’re building a new application from scratch, this can be engineered in. If you’re working with an already extant application (which most people are), then it can be a difficult and time-consuming process to add this functionality. The more complex your application and the more services it interacts with, the more difficult it is to burst.

Next, software must be configured accordingly so as to run multiple instances at the same time. When it comes to building an entire application from scratch which can be engineered in. in case you are already working with an already extant software (which most people commonly use), then it could be a hard and time consuming system to feature this capability. The more complicated your software and the greater offerings it interacts with, the more tough it’s far to burst.

With these limitations, cloud bursting is highly recommended for high end performance applications which would not suffer from the latency issues that comes whiles migrating from public to private cloud. Additionally, data centers should consider the data regulatory mandates like HIPAA or PCI DSS

Services which could Help

Data Centers like  Amazon Web Services (AWS),  Microsoft Azure and Pi DATACENTERS claim that their infrastructure complies with HIPAA, PCI DSS, and many other compliance standards, these companies have taken steps in reducing the downtime. And meanwhile easing the major infrastructure concerns which are related to hybrid cloud setups both in cloud bursting and in general.
